Varsity Football Improves to 5-0

The Lakers Varsity Football Team traveled to Vero Beach to compete against the Pirates of St. Edward’s School for what would be the most challenging game of the season. In a game that came down to the wire, the Lakers were able to hold out for the 36-32 victory.

Offensively, the Lakers we led by Junior RB Ismael Cortes, who rushed for 214 yards on 30 carries and 3 touchdowns. Sophomore Mathews Peres added 10 carries for 65 yards. The Lakers would dominate the day on the ground, finishing with 331 rushing yards. Sophomore QB Kai Patterson completed 6 of 14 passes for 87 yards and 1 touchdown. Senior WR Will Seelman caught one of those passes for 50 yards and the touchdown.

The offense for St. Edward’s would challenge the Laker defense all night long. After giving up 322 yards through 3 quarters, the Laker D locked in and held St. Edward’s to -4 yards in the final quarter. WPS also held the Pirates to 1-10 on 3rd down and 1-4 on 4th down. Ismael Cortes also led the defense with 6 tackles and a sack.

The Lakers will attempt to continue their unbeaten streak going on Friday at 7pm against Legacy Charter.
