Football Dominates Season Opener
The 2016 Laker Football Team officially kicked off the regular season with a convincing 55-7 win on the road at Boca Raton Christian School.
Offensively, the Lakers were led by a trio of running backs. Senior Robert Brand carried the ball 7 times for 98 yards, Junior Ismael Cortes racked up 75 yards and a touchdown on just 4 carries, and Sophomore Mason Russell pounded out 44 yards and 2 touchdowns on 7 carries. The Lakers were also efficient through the air, with Sophomore Kai Patterson completing 9 of his 14 attempts for 109 yards and 3 touchdowns. Sophomore Mathews Peres led the way in receiving yards, catching 3 passes for 44 yards and a touchdown. Senior Will Seelman caught 3 balls for 37 yards and a touchdown. Mason Russell also contributed in the receiving game, pulling in 2 passes, each for a touchdown.
Defensively the Lakers were stout, holding BRCS to a total of 113 yards, 21 on the ground and 92 through the air. What was even more impressive was the Lakers’ ability to get off the field, holding the Blazers to 0-7 on 3rd down and 0-3 on 4th down. WPS was also active in the turnover game, forcing 2 interceptions and a fumble. The leading tacklers for the Lakers were Mitchell Darrow (4), Robert Brand (3), and Mason Russell (3).
WPS returns to action this Friday night as they travel to Houston, Texas to compete against their sister school The Village School.
