Boys Basketball Wins Regional Championship
In front of a sell-out crowd in the gym, the WPS Varsity Basketball team made history on Saturday night, winning their first Regional Championship!
The Lakers were taking on an extremely good Tampa Prep team, which pushed them all night long. The tension in the gym was palpable, both teams and the home crowd knew what was on the line: not only a regional championship, but also a spot in the state tournament. At halftime, the Lakers trailed by 6 points. The game continued to be close, all the way down to the final minute, when the score was tied at 68 all.
WPS would rely on its leaders, and finished with the game on a 5-2 run, and getting the 73-70 victory.
Senior Parker Davis led the team with 20 points, David Nickelberry contributed 18, and Ryan Swoboda added 12 of his own, including a thunderous late game dunk.
The Lakers are back in action Tuesday night in the state semi-final, where they will be taking on Archbishop Carroll (Miami). The game tips off at 8 pm at the Lakeland Center.
