Football Wins in Season Finale
The 2015 Varsity Football Team wrapped up their season with a 54-24 win over Central Florida Christian Academy. The win was another offensive explosion for the Lakers, who scored at least 47 points in their final 5 games of the season. The WPS offense featured a variety of ball-carriers who were all able to make big plays and push the team to victory. Leading the way was Junior Robert Brand, who capitalized on the push being generated by the offensive line to eat up yards and keep drives alive. Zach Heaney, Mitchell Darrow, and Mason Russell all contributed on the ground as well, providing for a dangerous rushing attack that would ultimately lead to a WPS victory.
Defensively, the Lakers were led by senior Defensive End Bouldin Heistand, who shined in his final game as Laker. Senior Brett DioGuardi also provided some big plays, stepping up to play linebacker after being utilized mostly on offense and special teams for the variety of the season. The defense struggled in the first half of the game, but after allowing a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, locked down the potent CFCA offense. The defensive highlight of the night would be Mason Russell’s interception, which he returned for a touchdown.
The Lakers also got a boost on special teams, as Senior Davis Crayner returned a second half kick off for a touchdown, stealing momentum back for WPS and providing the boost the team needed to pull out the victory.
The Lakers finish their season 7-3, winning the final 5 games of the year after some early struggles. The 12 seniors graduating have left a strong legacy for WPS, leaving as the most winningest class in the history of Laker Football. Over their last two seasons, the seniors are an impressive 17-3. The Laker football program will always be grateful for everything this senior class has done for the program.
