Varsity Football Wins Big
The Laker varsity football team came up big with a Thursday win at home against Jordan Christian Prep. With the win, the varsity football team improves their record to 4-3. The Lakers put on a show in all three phases of the game, coming up with big plays on offense, defense, and special teams.
Offensively, the Lakers started fast, scoring on their first possession of the game when freshman Matthews Peres rushed in for a 21 yard touchdown run. Jordan Christian would score their only touchdown of the game on their ensuing kick off return. The rest of the game was dominated by Lakers ground game, as they rushed for 292 on 43 attempts. Leading the way in rushing yard was junior Robert Brand, who rushed for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns on 11 carries. Freshman fullback Mason Russell once again pounded the ball inside, rushing for 53 yards on 9 carries. The Lakers were also efficient through the air, as QB Parker Davis completed 8 of his 10 attempts with 2 touchdowns.
The Lakers defense was stout all night, giving up a total of 93 yards and holding Jordan Christian to an impressive 0-11 on third down conversions. Senior Boldin Heistand led the way on defense with 7 total tackles and 2 sacks. Junior captain Mitchell Darrow also played great on defense, tallying 9 tackles and an interception.
The varsity football team will wrap up the regular season on Friday night with their homecoming game at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports. Homecoming festivities begin at 6:30 and kickoff is at 7pm.
